National Make a Difference Day

October 24, 2026

National Make a Difference Day is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of October and stands as one of the largest community service events in the United States. On this day, millions of people across the country join forces to volunteer, clean up parks, build housing, or mentor local youth. It is a movement driven by grassroots efforts, with projects ranging from neighborhood cleanups to school supply drives, all designed to strengthen communities and help those in need.

The origins of National Make a Difference Day trace back to the leap year of 1992. On February 29, 1992, USA WEEKEND magazine, a national Sunday supplement under Gannett, challenged its readers to dedicate their “extra” leap day to meaningful acts of service. Marcia Bullard, CEO of the magazine, called on Americans to use this bonus day to help their neighbors and local communities. The response was overwhelming, prompting the magazine to partner with the nonprofit organization Points of Light and establish Make a Difference Day as an annual tradition held on the fourth Saturday of October.

The spirit of National Make a Difference Day lies in encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to take action where they live. Volunteers often organize food drives, renovation projects, environmental cleanups, and youth mentorship programs. While the specific activities may vary, the goals remain the same—to improve local communities and inspire a culture of service nationwide.
