| Why Is “AMBULANCE” Written Backwards? Have you ever noticed that the word AMBULANCE is often written backwards on the front of an ambulance? There’s a simple reason: rear-view mirrors.
When a driver looks in their rear-view mirror, the image is reversed. So when an ambulance has “ECNALUBMA” printed on the front, it appears as “AMBULANCE” in a driver’s mirror.
This makes the word much easier to recognize quickly. When an ambulance is approaching from behind with its emergency lights and siren on, the driver can immediately understand what is happening and move out of the way when it is safe to do so.
The lettering is therefore not backwards by accident—it is a practical design that helps emergency vehicles get through traffic more safely and quickly.
