🚑 What Can a Paramedic Do in the Prehospital Setting?

By Leadership Team
September 2, 2026

Paramedics do so much more than “drive the ambulance.” They bring advanced emergency care directly to the patient—often in the most unpredictable environments.

🩺 Assess & Treat: Perform detailed patient assessments and recognize life-threatening conditions.

💉 Medications & IV/IO Access: Administer a wide range of emergency medications and establish IV or intraosseous access when indicated.

❤️ Advanced Airway & Resuscitation: Manage airways, provide ventilatory support, perform advanced resuscitation, and use cardiac monitoring/defibrillation when needed.

📈 Cardiac Care: Obtain and interpret 12-lead ECGs, identify dangerous rhythms, and initiate time-sensitive interventions.

🩸 Trauma Care: Control hemorrhage, manage shock, provide spinal/orthopedic care when indicated, and rapidly prioritize transport for critically injured patients.

🧠 Critical Thinking Under Pressure: Make complex clinical decisions with limited information, while continuously reassessing and adapting to a patient’s changing condition.

🤝 Teamwork & Communication: Coordinate with EMTs, firefighters, law enforcement, nurses, physicians, and receiving hospitals to create a seamless continuum of care.

The goal isn’t simply to get a patient to the hospital. It’s to bring the hospital to the patient when every second matters. 🚑❤️
