The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends these winter fire safety tips:

Keep distance: Keep items that can burn at least 3 feet away from heat sources.

Turn off space heaters: Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to bed.

Check vents: Make sure vents are clear of snow and ice to allow carbon monoxide to vent outside.

Service your heating system: Have a professional service your furnace or heating system annually.

Use candles safely: Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything flammable, and never leave them unattended.

Inspect holiday lights: Inspect holiday lights each year before using them.

Cook carefully: Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food.

Install smoke alarms: Install smoke alarms and test them at least once a month.

Plan an escape: Plan how you would escape from a fire.
